Chickens in La'ie have become quite a nuisance. Here is some information:
- Honolulu City Ordinance: Animals and Fowl
Article 2: Animal Nuisances talks about what is against city ordinances. Section 7-2.2 includes definitions, such as what a nuisance is (making noise continuously for 10 minutes, or intermittently for 30 minutes), 7-2.5 (residences are limited to 2 chickens each) and other related issues.
- Hawaiian Humane Society
Information about animal related laws, what to do to report violations, etc.
- Letter regarding Feral Chickens
Letter from the State Department of Health regarding feral chickens and Bird Flu.
Chicken Traps
1. You are responsible for the trap as soon as you pick it up and until you return it. Please take good care of it. If damaged, you will need to fix it.
2. You will need to provide the chicken feed and/or bread crumbs.
3. Suggestion: Set up a feeding station in your yard to first attract the chickens. Throw out the chicken feed and/or bread crumbs in the morning and evenings for 2-3 days. Then set up the trap and use a trail of chicken feed and/or bread crumbs leading to inside the trap.
4. Call Gerry Nihipali (293-9988) to let her know how many chickens need to be picked up and she will let you know when.
5. We will be having 2 pick-up days/week, Mondays and Thursdays. You will need to continue to provide feed and water for the chickens until they are picked up by either Pat or Bernie from the Gamebreeders Association. They do not charge for their services but you can help to pay for their gas in traveling out here to Laie.
Please help our community decrease this chicken population, decrease the possibility of a lice problem, decrease other possible health concerns.
